did some necessary beav trapping to lower the water levels at one of my wetands.  this will allow me to go in and redo some 10 year old potholes that have become unproductive.  the work will consist of releveling the existing pothole complex and installing a berm that will allow a water control device to be installed.   the resulting impoundment will allow for water draw downs and subsequent plantings and  flooding in the fall. a small version of my 6 acre site i built two years ago.

hope to get started by early july and have a good millet and natural vegetation selection by the opener.

pixs and updates to follow.

looks like the wheels of progress will be turning slower than i had hoped.  i will have wait until next year to get the new  SWAMP impoundment done.  met with my nrcs rep this past friday on some issues with the HAVEN and he said that my project won't be able to make it off his desk until later this year.... oh well. patience is a virtue.

on the brighter side, i also met with an nrcs biologist and picked up some helpful hints regarding impoundment management.

as i sit here waiting for old man winter to move on, i thought i would post up and let you know that the new impoundment will be a reality. all funding is in place so it's a matter of waiting for good weather.  I would think june will likely be the start date.

as a footnote, i am going to go with smartweed this year, in lieu of jap millet in my impoundments.  each year i learn a little more.

reasons for switching over:

although ducks do love jap millet, it pales in comparison to their love of smart weed.

also, the millet gets devoured by migrating flocks of black birds before the ducks show up and the feed quantity is severally diminished.  the tweety birds leave the smart weed alone.

it's more expensive but the results seem to be well worth it.  i will plant smartweed  because the natural occuring crop is not reliable.  some years are great, others are not.  this year we had a drought and the smart weed didn't grow well.

ps. i may play it smart (no pun intended) and plant "some" millet........just in case my smart weed farming skills don't pan out...:D

the work has begun finally.  patience is a virtue when planning these things!

I started a new thread to document it.
